The Telephone Call
Exhibited: The Midlands: Whimsy and Pathos by Mandy Hunniford, Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, Launceston 2019
Inventor, teacher and astronomer, Alfred Biggs made the first telephone call in the Southern Hemisphere in 1874. He cleverly constructed his own telephone sets based on the sketches by Alexander Bell, successfully transmitting sounds between Launceston and Campbell Town,
These telephone sets are now in the permanent collection of the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in Launceston, Tasmania.
