About the artwork:
There were several creative and charitable collaborations between the Chinese and Tasmanian communities over a 10-year period (1885-1895). Six artistic events were created in Launceston for the financial benefit of its community.
Illuminations, fireworks and flotillas were held in the majestic beauty of the First Basin, Cataract Gorge and Kings Bridge. Processions, opera, acrobatics and fireworks were held in City Park, showcasing the splendour of the architecture of the Albert Hall and the John Hart Conservatory.
About The Celestials collection:
The Chinese community, or the Celestials as they were respectfully known, were amongst some of the first pioneers to settle in the North East of Tasmania. The collection acknowledges the Chinese people, connections, events and their cultural heritage including a flotilla, carnivals and the brilliant colours of the apple, plum and cherry orchards of Chung Gong and his family at Turners Marsh.
